Displacement on the North Side

Displacement on Chicago’s North Side is at an all time high: according to the Institute of Housing Studies at DePaul in 2016, Uptown, Rogers Park, Lincoln Park, Lakeview, North Center, and Lincoln Square lost 5,030 affordable units in a single year, while over 20,000 were in need of affordable housing in those same neighborhoods.

From the rapid eviction of residents in SROs like the Wilson Men’s Hotel and the Lorali, to the displacement of residents living in the tent cities at the Lawrence and Wilson viaducts, the homes of long time residents of the North Side, particularly people of color, are threatened by luxury development.
